MORE ISLANDS THAN YOU CAN COUNT

Indonesia is not one country — it is seventeen thousand of them, strung across three time zones with more languages, landscapes, and ways of life than anywhere else in Southeast Asia. The cities hum, the volcanoes smoke, the reefs teem, and the eastern islands still feel like a genuine frontier.

The shape of the country

Start with these places

Orientate Yourself

Indonesia stretches wider than the continental United States, from Sumatra in the west to Papua in the east. Each major island or island group has its own culture, religion, food, and travel rhythm.

The heartland

Java

Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Borobudur, volcanic highlands, and the densest, most populous stretch of the archipelago.

The island of gods

Bali

Hindu temples, rice terraces, surf breaks, yoga retreats, and the one island that needs no introduction.

Bali's quieter neighbour

Lombok & the Gilis

Mount Rinjani, Sasak culture, empty surf beaches, and three tiny coral islands with no cars.

Dragons & reefs

Flores, Komodo & the Lesser Sundas

Komodo dragons, pink beaches, world-class diving, traditional villages, and the wild eastern archipelago.

The wild west

Sumatra

Orangutans, Lake Toba, jungle treks, surf camps, and the largest island entirely within Indonesia.

Rainforest & rituals

Kalimantan & Sulawesi

Orangutan river cruises, Toraja funeral rites, dive sites, and the strangest-shaped island on the map.

The last frontier

Maluku & Papua

Raja Ampat, the Spice Islands, tribal highlands, and the parts of Indonesia that still feel truly remote.

Before you go

Indonesia in practice

A few things shape most days here: cash, transport logistics, how you handle heat and humidity, and accepting that island time is real.
Money

Cards are easier than you think

Hotels, restaurants, cafes, and most shops in tourist areas take card — but keep rupiah handy for markets and warungs.

Cards are widely accepted in Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and most tourist-facing businesses across Java and Lombok. Warungs, markets, and local transport still run on cash, and ATMs can be unreliable in remote areas. Carry enough rupiah to cover a day or two, just in case.

Language

A smile and a phrase

Bahasa Indonesia is approachable and locals really appreciate the effort.

English is widely spoken in Bali and tourist pockets, less so elsewhere. Learn terima kasih, selamat pagi, and some numbers. A phrasebook or translation app goes a long way on the less-travelled islands.

Pace

Island time is real

Ferries leave when they are full, not when the schedule says.

Build buffer days between flights and ferries. Morning plans become afternoon plans. A four-hour drive can take eight. The sooner you stop fighting it, the sooner Indonesia starts making sense.
